National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the installation of Project Information Sign Boards embedded with Quick Response (QR) codes across major national highway stretches. The initiative is designed to provide real-time, project-specific details and emergency contacts to road users, ensuring quicker assistance and improved awareness along India’s extensive highway network.
The QR-enabled boards will feature essential information including the National Highway number, chainage details, project length, and the scheduled construction and maintenance timelines. Commuters will also gain instant access to contact numbers for highway patrol teams, toll management, project managers, resident engineers, NHAI field offices, and the dedicated emergency helpline 1033. Beyond safety, the signage aims to improve commuter convenience. The boards will display details of nearby facilities such as hospitals, petrol pumps, public toilets, police stations, restaurants, truck lay-bys, vehicle service stations, puncture repair shops, and electric vehicle charging points. Strategic placement will ensure maximum visibility and utility, with installations planned near toll plazas, highway start and end points, rest areas, truck lay-bys, and wayside amenities.
According to officials, the project reflects a broader vision of developing sustainable, commuter-friendly highways that integrate technology to enhance operational efficiency. By digitising access to critical information, NHAI intends to reduce delays during emergencies and provide users with actionable data in real time. Experts note that such initiatives also contribute to a reduction in roadside congestion, as travellers can make informed decisions about fuel stops, rest breaks, and emergency interventions. Additionally, the QR code boards align with India’s push towards digital governance and smart infrastructure. They not only reduce the need for excessive paper-based signage but also facilitate timely updates on road conditions, ongoing construction, or emergency alerts. Officials emphasise that these boards are part of an ongoing strategy to make highways safer, more accessible, and environmentally responsible.
With increasing vehicular density and urban expansion along national corridors, providing commuters with accurate, immediate, and accessible information is expected to significantly improve road safety outcomes. NHAI has confirmed that the rollout will begin in phases, prioritising high-traffic corridors to maximise impact. As highways evolve into smart transport corridors, such technology-driven initiatives are likely to play a pivotal role in shaping safer, more sustainable, and commuter-centric road infrastructure across India.
