NHAI Expands NH-48 Service Roads in PCMC, Aiming for Smoother Urban Connectivity
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to expand service roads along NH-48 within the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits, addressing the pressing traffic challenges in one of Pune’s busiest corridors. The initiative comes as a response to growing public demand and the increasing strain on existing infrastructure due to rapid urbanisation in areas such as Punawale, Bhumkar Chowk, Hinjewadi, and Balewadi. The expansion, which will add a 12-metre-wide service road on each side, effectively doubling the existing width to 24 metres, is expected to significantly ease congestion and improve access for local commuters and businesses.
Currently, NH-48’s main carriageway within PCMC spans 60 metres, supplemented by an additional 12-metre Development Plan (DP) road on either side, making the total road network width 84 metres. With the new service road development, this integrated infrastructure is poised to provide a seamless traffic flow, enhancing both safety and efficiency for daily commuters. The demand for these improvements has been persistent, as deteriorating road conditions, waterlogging during monsoons, and haphazard traffic movement have long plagued the region. PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh highlighted the critical role of this expansion, stating that 95% of the required land has already been acquired, facilitating smooth execution of the project. With an estimated cost of ₹604.59 crore, the initiative includes the construction of durable rigid concrete pavements and an advanced stormwater drainage system to prevent seasonal flooding, ensuring sustainable infrastructure.
