NFR Conducts First Freight Train Trial Run on Shokhuvi-Molvom Railway Section in Nagaland
The development for the railway infrastructure in Nagaland, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) successfully completed the first trial run of a freight train on the Shokhuvi-Molvom railway section, part of the Dhansiri-Zubza new line project. This milestone, achieved on Tuesday, marks an important step in the effort to enhance connectivity in the region and improve logistical services across the state.
The 15.419 km stretch of railway between Shokhuvi and Molvom is expected to become fully operational in the coming months, providing a crucial link between the two areas. The successful trial run was conducted using Multi-Unit (MU) locomotives, an important feature that showcases the modernisation of the railway system in the region.
The freight train made its way to Molvom station around 6 PM, highlighting the strategic importance of the new railway link. Once the railway line becomes fully operational, Molvom will join Dimapur and Shokhuvi as one of Nagaland’s key railway stations, offering both passenger and freight services that will significantly improve the region’s transportation capabilities. NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma emphasised the importance of the new rail link in fostering economic growth for Nagaland. “The new rail link will significantly improve passenger and freight movement, bridging logistical gaps and fostering economic development in the region,” Sharma said. With improved connectivity, the region is expected to see an influx of business opportunities, encourage investments, and drive the socio-economic development of Nagaland.
The completion of this section of the Dhansiri-Zubza new line is a major step towards modernising infrastructure in Nagaland and the Northeast region as a whole. Railway connectivity in this region has always been a challenge due to the hilly terrain and remote locations. However, the successful trial run of this freight train signals the completion of key infrastructure projects that are set to make a lasting impact on the region. The introduction of the new railway link will provide greater accessibility for industries, helping local businesses connect with national markets more efficiently. The faster and more reliable movement of goods and services will be an economic boon for the people of Nagaland. Moreover, the railway’s capacity to handle freight will aid in improving supply chains and logistical networks, which are essential for industrial and agricultural growth in the region.
This project is part of the NFR’s larger initiative to modernise and expand railway services in the Northeast, a region that has long been underserved by transportation infrastructure. As the Shokhuvi-Molvom section nears full operation, it will not only boost trade but also make travel more convenient for residents, opening up opportunities for tourism, education, and healthcare in areas previously difficult to access. The successful trial run is a clear indicator that Nagaland is on the path to achieving more integrated and sustainable growth, driven by the modernisation of its transport networks. With this railway project, NFR has set a solid foundation for the future, offering better prospects for economic development and quality of life for the people of Nagaland. The arrival of the full-scale operation of the Shokhuvi-Molvom railway line is highly anticipated, promising to play a pivotal role in transforming the state’s connectivity and economic landscape.
