The Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced stringent new policies regarding construction permits. The newly appointed PMRDA Commissioner outlined these measures, emphasising that permits for new constructions will only be granted upon the submission of comprehensive water management and waste disposal plans. This requirement aims to ensure sustainable development in the region, with a focus on efficient resource utilisation and environmental conservation.
The Commissioner stressed the importance of tackling traffic congestion, particularly by addressing the issue of missing road links. The PMRDA plans to prioritise the connection of these roads to alleviate traffic bottlenecks, thereby enhancing overall mobility in the region. In line with this, the Commissioner urged public support for the ring road project, which is expected to significantly improve traffic flow around the city. To incentivise participation, the PMRDA has proposed offering Transfer of Development Rights (TDR), Development Control Rules (DCR), and additional Floor Space Index (FSI) incentives. In addition to these measures, the Commissioner proposed a strategic initiative to secure a reserve of five TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water exclusively for drinking purposes. This initiative underscores the PMRDA’s commitment to ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for the city’s growing population.
The Commissioner also addressed the ongoing crackdown on illegal hookah bars and pubs, stating that the PMRDA will continue efforts to regularise existing constructions in residential areas. This move is part of a broader initiative to uphold zoning regulations and ensure that commercial activities do not disrupt residential communities. Furthermore, the Commissioner assured the public that stalled township projects would be resolved within the next fifteen days. This resolution is expected to provide relief to developers and homebuyers alike, facilitating the completion of key projects across the region. He also confirmed that permission has been granted for a new metro station near Raj Bhavan and a pedestrian bridge for students at the University of Pune, reflecting the PMRDA’s focus on improving public transportation and pedestrian infrastructure.
The construction of a flyover in front of Savitribai Phule Pune University is on track to be completed by the end of November. Additionally, metro work in the region is scheduled for completion by March, promising significant improvements in the city’s public transport network. These initiatives reflect the PMRDA’s comprehensive approach to urban development, focusing on sustainable practices, efficient infrastructure, and regulatory compliance. As Pune continues to grow, these measures are expected to play a critical role in shaping the city’s future, ensuring a balanced and well-managed urban environment.
