Patna is poised for a significant leap in aviation infrastructure as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the new terminal building at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport on May 29, 2025.
This development is set to enhance passenger capacity and modernize facilities, marking a milestone in Bihar’s connectivity.
New Terminal to Boost Passenger Capacity
The newly constructed two-storey terminal spans 65,155 square metres and is designed to handle up to 4,500 passengers during peak hours. This expansion is expected to increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity from 2.5 million to 10 million. The terminal features modern amenities, including check-in counters, passenger boarding bridges, conveyor belts, and in-line baggage screening systems, ensuring efficient passenger movement.
Bihta Airport Civil Enclave Foundation Stone to Be Laid
In addition to the Patna airport terminal inauguration, Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone for the proposed civil enclave at Bihta Airport. The Bihta terminal is planned to cover 68,000 square metres and is projected to accommodate 3,000 passengers during peak hours, serving approximately 5 million travellers annually. This initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity and ease congestion at the Patna airport.
Infrastructure Development and Security Measures
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has reviewed preparations at Patna airport, emphasizing the need for proper arrangements for security, cleanliness, drinking water, ambulances, and fire services at the venue. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials are expected to present an overview of the infrastructure and facilities during the inauguration ceremony.
Traffic Management Ahead of PM’s Visit
To facilitate the Prime Minister’s visit and ensure smooth traffic flow, the Patna Police have implemented extensive arrangements. Authorities have erected blockades on routes leading to Patna airport and issued a detailed advisory to assist commuters with alternate travel plans. These measures aim to maintain public safety and minimize disruption during the high-profile visit.
Significance of the Developments
The inauguration of the new terminal at Patna airport and the foundation stone laying for the Bihta airport civil enclave are pivotal steps in enhancing Bihar’s aviation infrastructure. These developments are expected to boost tourism, promote economic growth, and improve regional connectivity, aligning with the government’s vision of creating sustainable and equitable urban environments.
