New Road Initiative Aims to Decongest Bandra-West

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a transformative new route designed to alleviate the persistent traffic congestion between Bandra West Station and the Western Express Highway.

This initiative aims to tackle the severe traffic bottlenecks at key junctions such as SV Road and Lucky Junction, with the goal of improving overall urban mobility. The proposal comes as a response to longstanding issues highlighted by former corporator of the Bandra H-West ward, who underscored the critical need for this project. The new route is expected to address the significant design flaw in the existing infrastructure, notably the lack of connectivity between the Bandra flyover and the sea link.

Urban planners have emphasised the necessity of creating new Development Plan (DP) roads to redistribute traffic more effectively and reduce congestion. Residents and local activists have largely welcomed the BMC’s proposal, viewing it as a crucial step towards better connectivity and enhanced local infrastructure. The plan necessitates the acquisition of approximately 1,347 square metres of land from the BEST depot and 1,897 square metres from a civic garage plot. Furthermore, the redevelopment of a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) plot will support the realisation of this project.

In addition to the proposed road improvements, the BMC has outlined several other infrastructure upgrades. These include the development of a state-of-the-art sports complex at Sherly Rajan and a new roadway to Kadeshwari, aimed at alleviating congestion at the Lilavati Junction. The maintenance and upgrade of the Worker Welfare Centre in Parel have also been addressed as part of a broader effort to enhance urban amenities and support community needs.

This comprehensive approach to urban planning reflects a growing emphasis on addressing traffic congestion through strategic infrastructure development, aiming to deliver significant improvements in Mumbai’s transport network and overall quality of life for its residents.
