New Rake Marks Progress for Panvel-Karjat Corridor
The Panvel-Karjat Corridor project has reached a significant milestone with the arrival of the first End Unloading Rake (EUR Rake) at Mahope station. This crucial delivery, which occurred early on Saturday morning, marks the beginning of the track-laying phase for this ambitious project, designed to enhance Mumbai’s transportation infrastructur The EUR rake, transporting 260-metre-long, 60 kg rail panels supplied by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is set to play a pivotal role in the installation of Long Welded Rails (LWR) along the corridor.
The arrival of the rake is a testament to the progress made by Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) in advancing the project, which is expected to provide a more durable and high-capacity rail network for Mumbai’s growing commuter base.
Previously, temporary rails sourced from the Central Railway were used to complete track-laying work between Mahope and Chikhale stations. With the arrival of the specialized EUR rake, the installation of permanent rails will now begin, covering a 7.8 km stretch between Mahope and Chikhale.
Once this section is completed, further track-laying work will extend to the Karjat and Chowk stations, where additional rakes are expected to arrive in the coming months.
With more than 70% of the Panvel-Karjat Suburban Corridor project now complete, the project is on track to be fully operational by December 2025. Upon completion, the corridor will significantly reduce travel times for commuters, improve connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), and alleviate congestion on existing suburban routes.
In addition to serving passengers, the corridor is also expected to bolster freight operations, further enhancing Mumbai’s strategic importance as a commercial hub.
The Panvel-Karjat Corridor is being developed to meet the growing demand for suburban rail services in the city, ensuring a sustainable and efficient transport solution. As the project progresses, it will not only provide faster and more reliable travel options for millions but also contribute to Mumbai’s long-term infrastructure goals, supporting economic growth and regional connectivity.
