New Rail Terminal at Manesar Improves Auto Logistics

Maruti Suzuki’s primary manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana, has been equipped with direct railway connectivity through the inauguration of India’s largest auto cargo terminal. This strategic development is set to enhance logistics efficiency and reduce road congestion, aligning with the nation’s green logistics objectives. The newly inaugurated terminal is part of the first phase of the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC) project, a 121.7 km high-speed railway initiative connecting Palwal to Sonipat via Sohna, Manesar, and Kharkhoda.

The terminal, situated within Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant, features 8.2 km of tracks and is designed to handle up to 4.5 lakh vehicles annually. This infrastructure aims to streamline the transportation of automobiles across the country, reducing reliance on road transport and mitigating associated environmental impacts. The direct railway link facilitates the transportation of vehicles directly from the manufacturing facility to various destinations, bypassing road networks and reducing traffic congestion.

This shift from road to rail is expected to lead to significant environmental benefits, including a reduction in carbon emissions and fuel consumption. Maruti Suzuki plans to increase the share of vehicle dispatches through rail to 35% by the fiscal year 2030-31, reflecting its commitment to sustainable logistics practices. The establishment of the auto cargo terminal underscores the growing importance of multimodal logistics solutions in India’s infrastructure development. By integrating rail connectivity into the automotive supply chain, the initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and improve delivery timelines.

This development is expected to bolster the competitiveness of the Indian automotive industry in the global market.  The successful implementation of the auto cargo terminal at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant sets a precedent for future infrastructure projects that prioritize sustainability and efficiency. As the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor progresses, additional terminals and facilities are anticipated to further enhance connectivity and support the growth of India’s logistics sector.
