New Rail Link to Boost Sikkim Connectivity

Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a Final Location Survey (FLS) for a proposed 75-kilometre railway line connecting Melli to Dentam.

Allocated a budget of ₹2.25 crore, the survey will be executed by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), marking a pivotal step towards integrating the remote regions of southern and western Sikkim into the national railway network. The proposed line will traverse through key towns such as Jorethang and Legship, ultimately linking Dentam, a town near the India-Nepal border, to Melli, which is poised to become a crucial junction. This development is envisioned as an extension of the under-construction Sivok-Rangpo railway line, anticipated to be operational by 2027. The integration of these lines aims to create a seamless rail corridor, enhancing mobility and fostering economic growth in the region.

Officials from the NFR have emphasized the strategic importance of this project, highlighting its potential to stimulate tourism, facilitate trade, and generate employment opportunities in districts like Gyalshing. By improving access to these areas, the railway line is expected to serve as a catalyst for socio-economic development, aligning with broader national objectives of regional integration and sustainable growth. The survey will assess the feasibility and optimal alignment of the route, taking into consideration the challenging Himalayan terrain and the need for environmentally sustainable construction practices. Given the ecological sensitivity of the region, the project will adhere to stringent environmental standards, ensuring minimal disruption to the local ecosystem.

The approval of the FLS for the Melli-Dentam line underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in the northeastern states. By extending the railway network into previously inaccessible areas, the initiative aims to bridge infrastructural gaps, promote inclusive development, and strengthen national integration. As the survey progresses, further details regarding the project’s implementation timeline and construction phases are expected to be announced. Stakeholders and residents alike are optimistic about the transformative impact of the railway line, anticipating improved access to markets, healthcare, and educational facilities.

Sanctioned survey for the Melli-Dentam railway line represents a forward-looking approach to regional development, emphasizing sustainable infrastructure, economic vitality, and enhanced quality of life for the people of Sikkim.
