In response to escalating demand and to enhance commuter experience, the Department of River Navigation (RND) in Panaji is gearing up to launch two state-of-the-art high-speed ferries on the Panaji-Betim route. These new vessels, running at 10 knots each, are poised to replace the existing slower ferries and promise a faster, smoother, and more efficient passage across the scenic Mandovi River.
The decision to introduce these advanced ferries comes amidst a surge in commuter footfall on the Panaji-Betim stretch, where queues have become a common sight even before the current ferries dock. On average, the route witnesses approximately 11,000 commuters and over 5,000 two-wheelers daily, highlighting the pressing need for improved transportation infrastructure. With the impending construction of a flyover at Porvorim likely to redirect traffic and further increase passenger numbers on the ferry route, the early deployment of high-speed vessels aims to preemptively mitigate congestion and ensure seamless connectivity during the construction phase. This strategic move underscores RND’s proactive approach to addressing potential logistical hurdles.
Beyond their superior speed, the new ferries offer increased capacity, accommodating up to eight cars compared to the current fleet’s six. Despite this enhancement, adherence to RND safety regulations ensures that each vessel will maintain a maximum capacity of 150 passengers, prioritizing safety alongside efficiency. The technical bidding process for procuring these advanced ferries is already underway, marking a significant step towards retiring the ageing vessels Harvalem and Mormagoa. These ferries, in service for two decades, currently operate at a slower speed of seven knots and will be phased out to make way for the new, more capable fleet. The introduction of high-speed ferries on the Panaji-Betim route represents a pivotal upgrade in Goa’s river transportation infrastructure.
