The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced the launch of a FASTag-based annual pass priced at ₹3,000. The pass will be available for private non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans starting August 15, 2025. The annual FASTag pass offers a flat-fee option that covers up to 200 toll trips or remains valid for one year from the date of activation — whichever comes first.
Announced by the Union Minister for Road Transport on social media, the scheme is expected to significantly cut costs for frequent travellers on India’s national highways. Designed to reduce congestion and improve toll collection efficiency, the initiative will allow private vehicle users to bypass the hassle of individual toll payments.
By adopting a prepaid model, the policy also addresses long-standing public complaints about toll plazas being located within short distances — often within 60 kilometres of each other — leading to excessive toll charges. The pass will be activated through a dedicated digital interface. Users can access the activation or renewal feature via the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app, or through official websites of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Once registered, the FASTag account will be updated to reflect the annual pass, enabling barrier-free movement across all national highways that support the system. The policy is part of the government’s broader strategy to simplify tolling mechanisms, boost digital payments, and promote time-saving travel infrastructure. The National Highways network, currently spanning over 1.5 lakh kilometres, remains one of the busiest in the world, with toll plazas frequently causing bottlenecks during peak seasons.
Transport officials believe the new scheme will benefit millions of private vehicle owners, especially those who rely on national highways for routine travel, intercity commuting, and leisure trips. It is also expected to reduce fuel wastage caused by frequent stops and improve the overall carbon footprint of India’s road transport sector by easing flow and lowering idling emissions.
However, the pass is not applicable for commercial vehicles, transport carriers, or vehicles used for goods movement. For these categories, existing toll structures will continue to apply. As India pushes toward smarter and more equitable transport systems, the FASTag annual pass presents a practical, people-centric approach to managing toll infrastructure.
