New Expressways From Agra Set to Revolutionise Connectivity and Embrace Electric Mobility
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the development of two new six-lane expressways originating from Agra. These ambitious projects, connecting Agra to Gwalior and Aligarh respectively, are strategically designed to be “EV-ready,” integrating dedicated charging infrastructure alongside traditional fuel services. This forward-thinking approach aims to drastically reduce travel times, enhance logistical efficiency, and solidify Agra’s position as a pivotal hub in India’s evolving green mobility landscape.
The imperative for such expansive infrastructure development stems from India’s burgeoning economic growth and the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Recognising this shift, NHAI is actively working to create a robust network of EV-friendly highways across the nation. Beyond merely facilitating faster movement of goods and people, these expressways are envisioned as comprehensive travel corridors, equipped with modern amenities that cater to the needs of all commuters while promoting a cleaner, more sustainable future for urban and inter-city travel.
The first of these projects, the 88-kilometre Gwalior-Rohta, Agra expressway, represents a substantial investment of approximately ₹4,200 crore. This critical link will feature an engineering marvel in the form of a hanging bridge over the Chambal River, a testament to modern construction capabilities. With construction slated to commence in October and an aggressive 24-month completion target, this expressway is poised to dramatically cut travel time between Agra and Gwalior to just 90 minutes, a significant improvement from the current two to two-and-a-half hours. Furthermore, its seamless integration with Agra’s inner ring road will provide enhanced access to major national corridors, including the Yamuna Expressway, Lucknow Expressway, and NH-19, amplifying its strategic importance for freight and passenger movement.
Parallelly, the 64-kilometre expressway connecting Khandauli to Aligarh, with a budget estimated at ₹3,400 crore, will also begin phased construction in October. This route is designed to provide seamless connectivity to the Yamuna Expressway, considerably improving accessibility to both Aligarh and Hathras, key agricultural and industrial hubs. The initial phase of construction will focus on widening the existing section from Khandauli to Teedi Bagiya Chauraha, followed by the construction of a new elevated road linking Teedi Bagiya to Rambagh Chauraha. This multi-pronged approach aims to alleviate traffic congestion and streamline vehicle flow, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and more efficient urban logistics.
Both expressways are being meticulously planned to offer comprehensive wayside amenities. Each route will incorporate dedicated EV charging stations, capable of simultaneously charging two vehicles within a rapid 15 to 20 minutes, addressing a crucial need for long-distance EV travel. Additionally, provisions for one to two petrol and CNG pumps on each side, well-appointed food plazas offering diverse culinary options, and gender-segregated toilet facilities underscore a commitment to holistic traveller comfort and convenience. These forward-looking projects exemplify a strategic national pivot towards integrated, sustainable, and technologically advanced infrastructure, setting a precedent for future highway development that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility and user-centric design.
