New Expressway and Metro Network Transforms Navi Mumbai Airport

The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is poised to become a pioneering hub in India’s transport infrastructure, significantly enhancing the region’s connectivity.

Set to open in phases starting in June 2025, this greenfield project is not just an airport but a model of inter-modal connectivity. With road access from three sides, the airport will be integrated into an expansive network that includes metro, suburban rail, monorails, sky trains, hovercrafts, and other transportation options, creating a seamless experience for travellers. Strategically located in Panvel, the airport will benefit from excellent highway access, linking it directly to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). It will also feature a metro corridor connecting it to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), providing quick and easy airport-to-airport travel. Suburban rail lines and metro services will further increase accessibility, while hovercraft services will provide an innovative way to travel between South Mumbai and NMIA, cutting down travel time to just 20 minutes.

Currently, the only access to the airport is via road. However, the completion of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) and the ongoing development of the Ulwe Coastal Road will significantly improve connectivity. The Ulwe Coastal Road, a major infrastructure project costing Rs 1,590 crore, will connect the airport directly to key locations, including the Atal Setu junction. The construction work for this road is expected to be completed by 2026, and it will feature an elevated airport link over major railway lines and roads.

Further plans for NMIA’s development include major upgrades to Kalamboli, a crucial junction linking five key highways, which will be revamped into a signal-free access point to both the airport and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). A Rs 500 crore interchange is being developed here, which will ease traffic flow and provide fast access to the airport. Alongside this, the Sion-Panvel Highway and Palm Beach Road will connect the airport to the western and southern parts of Mumbai.

In addition to road upgrades, the NMIA project will feature a robust metro network, including the Navi Mumbai Airport Express Line. This 34-km metro line, which will run from CSMIA to NMIA, will consist of both elevated and underground sections, with 20 stations planned along the route. The project is set to cater to the daily needs of over 22 lakh passengers by 2061, with a peak load of around 37,000 commuters per hour.

In the long run, the integration of NMIA into a multimodal transport ecosystem will serve as a catalyst for growth in the region. It will not only improve accessibility to Mumbai but will also boost regional and interstate connectivity, making it easier for people to travel across Maharashtra and beyond. The water taxi service, planned to reduce road traffic and pollution, will provide further relief to commuters by connecting key locations across the MMR.

NMIA’s development is a significant step towards transforming Mumbai’s urban mobility and strengthening the region’s role in India’s global connectivity network. With cutting-edge transportation infrastructure and a focus on sustainable, eco-friendly urban development, NMIA will set a new benchmark for Indian airports and regional connectivity, offering a seamless travel experience that aligns with the nation’s aspirations for smarter, greener cities.
