New Delhi’s urban landscape is on the cusp of a significant transformation as the National Capital Region prepares for the rollout of four new major expressways. These projects, which have received the green light from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, are designed to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion that has long plagued commuters in Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, and Faridabad. Beyond merely reducing travel times, these ambitious infrastructure projects align with a broader vision of creating more sustainable, eco-friendly, and equitable urban spaces.
A key highlight of this development is the proposed elevated road from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar, a project aimed at de-congesting the notoriously clogged Delhi-Jaipur Expressway. By elevating traffic flow, this new arterial road is expected to significantly reduce vehicular emissions and noise pollution at ground level. This innovative approach to road design prioritizes a seamless flow of vehicles, which, in turn, can lead to lower fuel consumption and a smaller carbon footprint per journey. The project underscores a commitment to balancing infrastructural growth with environmental responsibility.
In another major development, a five-kilometre underground tunnel is being constructed to ease the heavy traffic between Dwarka and Vasant Kunj. This six-lane, signal-free tunnel, running from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, represents a significant investment in a high-capacity, sub-surface transport solution. By diverting a substantial volume of traffic underground, the project frees up surface-level public spaces and reduces urban sprawl, contributing to a more compact and walkable city. Officials estimate the project’s cost to be approximately Rs 3,500 crore, highlighting the substantial financial commitment to modern, sustainable infrastructure.
To bolster access to the new Noida International Airport, the Yamuna embankment road (Pushta Road) is being connected to National Highway-9. This crucial link is designed to relieve the immense pressure on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, a primary artery for regional travel. The plan is to develop either an eight-lane ground-level expressway or a six-lane elevated road. This project not only aims to enhance connectivity but also seeks to integrate transport networks more efficiently, which is vital for a growing urban centre. The strategic location of this road along the Yamuna embankment also opens up discussions on equitable access and urban development along the river.
Finally, the recently inaugurated Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2), now dubbed Delhi’s third ring road, is a 75-kilometer, six-lane highway designed to drastically cut travel times between Delhi, Gurgaon, and Noida. This project is a game-changer for regional mobility, creating a seamless loop that distributes traffic more evenly across the city. By acting as a third ring road, UER-2 is expected to redirect a significant volume of inter-city traffic away from Delhi’s congested inner roads, thereby reducing pollution and improving the quality of life for residents. The long-term impact of this project is expected to be transformative, setting a new standard for urban transportation planning in the region. These four projects collectively mark a pivot towards smarter, more sustainable urban development, focusing on efficiency and environmental stewardship.
