New Delhi to Launch Exclusive Train Portal for Parliament Travel

In a move aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency and modernising public service interfaces, Indian Railways is developing a dedicated online ticket booking portal exclusively for sitting and former Members of Parliament. Officials confirmed that this initiative will allow Parliamentarians to reserve and cancel train tickets seamlessly, eliminating the need for physical bookings and manual intervention. The platform, designed with user convenience in mind, is part of a larger digital transformation drive within the national transporter, as the government prioritises institutional travel reforms across sectors.

Currently, Members of Parliament are entitled to travel in First Class Air Conditioned or Executive Class coaches, often accompanied by a spouse or companion, as part of their service privileges. However, the lack of a streamlined digital interface has long posed administrative challenges, leading to delays and travel disruptions. With the introduction of this MP-exclusive booking system, authorities expect improved transparency, faster reservations, and better travel planning. The move also aligns with the larger goal of building a paperless governance framework that integrates inclusivity and efficiency in public service delivery. This initiative also arrives in the context of the Indian Railways’ broader efforts to digitise its passenger services through innovations such as the recently launched RailOne app.

Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the app combines ticket bookings, live train tracking, grievance redressal, and e-catering into one interface. With the introduction of multiple digital layers, officials are attempting to create an integrated, technology-first railway ecosystem that serves both everyday commuters and institutional users like Parliamentarians without compromising accessibility or fairness. While the MP-specific portal raises questions around digital equity and special access, officials defend the move as a logistical upgrade rather than a preferential one. Ensuring that government representatives have uninterrupted travel access, especially during parliamentary sessions and national emergencies, is viewed as essential to institutional continuity.

However, public policy observers urge the government to also invest in improving the overall user experience for ordinary citizens, including rural passengers, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. They stress the need for railway digitalisation to remain inclusive and not deepen privilege gaps. Ultimately, the rollout of this exclusive portal marks another milestone in the Indian Railways’ modernisation journey. If executed with transparency and complemented by broader reforms, the system could pave the way for similar digital innovations in other public service domains. As India’s transport infrastructure evolves, the emphasis must remain on balancing convenience for institutional actors with equity for all citizens, ensuring that technology does not create divides but builds bridges in public access.
