New Delhi to Integrate Biometric Tools at Airports

A high-level workshop in New Delhi on 27 June saw aviation security agencies chart a roadmap for smart, passenger-centric airports. The central proposal introduces facial recognition in CCTV and access passes, alongside vehicle fast‑tag and ANPR systems, to boost efficiency and reduce wait times at check‑ins and entries.

Representatives from the CISF, MoCA, DGCA, BCAS, AAI, Immigration Bureau, Delhi Police, SPG, NSG, DIAL, and airlines attended, underscoring a unified security front. Officials discussed integrating biometric entry passes with CCTV, facial recognition, ANPR, and FASTag-enabled vehicle lanes. Digital SOPs supported by AI-enabled analytics aim to expedite passenger flow while preserving vigilance. The CISF emphasised making security “stronger, faster and more passenger‑friendly” through mindful tech use.

Unified training across 69 airports—and plans for new aviation security training centres in tier 2 and tier 3 cities—aim to build consistent professionalism across staff. The meeting also focused on layered security for high‑profile travellers, exploring anti‑drone systems and insider threat detection methods designed to integrate seamlessly with airport operations . Advanced CCTV analytics will monitor for unattended items and suspicious behaviour while AI will assist in risk prediction and prevention. Digitally streamlined SOPs promise quicker incident response.

While security enhancements are central, agencies prioritised enhancing passenger convenience—reducing queues and manual checks through automated, gender-neutral systems that uphold zero‑carbon goals via reduced idling and streamlined operations. The workshop reflected improved multi‑agency coordination, reaffirming shared protocols across civil aviation bodies and central forces. Authorities stressed this integrated future aligns with both security and sustainable travel imperatives.
