The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is set to launch a new FASTag annual pass from August 15, 2025. This innovative initiative aims to transform the commuting experience on national highways and expressways, offering a seamless and cost-effective alternative to repetitive toll payments. The introduction of this pass is poised to boost travel efficiency, reduce congestion, and contribute to a more sustainable and accessible transport network across India.
The new FASTag annual pass is designed to replace multiple toll payments with a single, affordable yearly fee. Priced at ₹3,000 for the base year 2025-26, the pass will grant users up to 200 toll-free trips or one year of validity, whichever comes first, at authorised National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) toll plazas. This fixed-fee model offers substantial savings for regular commuters, making highway travel more economical and predictable. The simplified payment mechanism is expected to significantly reduce queuing times at toll booths, leading to smoother traffic flow and less vehicular idling.
To activate the annual pass, vehicle owners must have an active FASTag installed and verify their vehicle’s eligibility via the Rajmargyatra mobile application or the NHAI website. Upon successful payment, the pass is typically activated within two hours. This digital-first approach aligns with India’s broader push for digital transformation in public services, promoting efficiency and transparency in transactions. The pass is exclusively for private non-commercial cars, jeeps, and vans, ensuring that its benefits are targeted towards individual commuters.
The benefits of the FASTag Annual Pass extend beyond mere cost savings. By eliminating the need for frequent cash transactions at toll plazas, it promises considerable time savings for users, enhancing the overall convenience of highway travel. The pass’s nationwide applicability for all NHAI-managed highways ensures a consistent and hassle-free experience across the country’s extensive road network. While it is valid only on national highways and expressways, its widespread acceptance will significantly improve inter-city travel for millions.
This initiative is a crucial step towards building more eco-friendly and sustainable cities by promoting efficient road usage. Reduced traffic congestion at toll plazas means less fuel consumption and lower vehicular emissions, contributing directly to zero-net-carbon goals. By making highway travel more accessible and efficient, the government is also fostering equitable mobility, ensuring that a broader segment of the population can benefit from India’s expanding road infrastructure. The introduction of the FASTag annual pass is a testament to the ongoing efforts to modernise India’s transport landscape, making it more user-friendly, cost-effective, and environmentally conscious.
