The Ministry of Railways has given its final nod for the detailed survey of a proposed 380-kilometre new railway line connecting Neemuch, Banswara, Dahod, and Nandurbar. This significant infrastructure development is poised to unlock the economic and social potential of tribal-dominated areas across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. The project underscores a strategic commitment to fostering inclusive growth, enhancing connectivity, and promoting sustainable development in previously underserved regions.
This ambitious railway corridor is designed to create a vital new route for trains travelling between Delhi and Mumbai, offering the shortest link through the Tapti section via Dahod. By integrating Banswara, a district rich in mineral resources but currently unconnected to the Indian Railways network, the line is anticipated to unlock substantial freight opportunities. The efficient transportation of minerals such as manganese ore, dolomite, limestone, gold, copper, and quartzite from Neemuch–Banswara–Dahod will significantly reduce logistics costs and carbon emissions associated with road transport, aligning with eco-friendly development goals.
The proposed route, complementing the ongoing Dungarpur–Banswara–Ratlam project, will pass through hilly and tribal regions, providing a direct link between the Tapti rail section and the high-density Mumbai–New Delhi main corridor at Dahod. This enhanced connectivity is crucial for bringing people from remote areas into the mainstream economy. It will facilitate easier access to markets, education, and healthcare, thereby promoting equitable development and improving the quality of life for tribal communities, ensuring that the benefits of progress are shared across all sections of society.
Beyond its economic and social impact, the new railway line is expected to catalyse tourism across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. Improved accessibility to these regions will encourage domestic and potentially international tourism, stimulating local businesses and creating new employment opportunities, particularly for women and youth. The development of such green infrastructure projects is fundamental to building resilient and sustainable regional economies, reducing reliance on carbon-intensive transport methods, and fostering environmental stewardship.
The approval for the Detailed Project Report (DPR) marks a decisive step towards the execution of this transformative project. It reflects the government’s strategic vision to leverage railway expansion as a tool for regional development, ensuring that areas with significant natural resources and untapped human potential are integrated into the national economic fabric. This investment in sustainable transport infrastructure is a testament to India’s commitment to inclusive growth and its journey towards a zero-net-carbon future, where efficient connectivity underpins prosperity for all.
