New Deadline Announced for Sambhajinagars Rs 822 Crore Water Project

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’s ambitious ₹2,740 crore water supply project, initiated in 2019, has faced multiple delays, with the latest deadline set for October 2025.

The project aims to address the severe water scarcity affecting over 1.8 million residents. Initially slated for completion in March 2024, the project’s deadline was extended to December 2024 and subsequently to March 2025 due to slow progress. Key components, including pipeline installation and jackwell construction, have been delayed, prompting concerns among residents. The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) faced financial constraints, leading to the state government agreeing to fund its ₹822 crore share. However, the release of these funds has been delayed, with the municipal body yet to receive the promised amount. The state government has proposed providing the funds as a soft loan, but the process remains pending.

The project’s implementation has been marred by administrative challenges, including allegations of substandard work and threats against officials. In one instance, a contractor was arrested following accusations of obstructing government functions and threatening a Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) official. Such incidents have raised questions about the project’s management and oversight. Residents have expressed frustration over the repeated delays and unmet promises. In response, political parties have intensified their campaigns. Shiv Sena (UBT) organized 90 protests in 20 days, highlighting the water crisis and demanding accountability. The BJP has countered these protests, emphasizing the challenges faced during the previous administration.

As the October 2025 deadline approaches, the success of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar water supply project hinges on timely funding, effective administration, and transparent execution. The residents’ patience is wearing thin, and the authorities must act swiftly to ensure the project’s completion and address the city’s pressing water needs.
