The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has invited bids for the construction of a modern commercial tower at Thane Railway Station. The project, which is part of the Central Government’s Smart Cities Mission, aims to revitalize the area and enhance connectivity for commuters. The planned eight-story building will feature a mix of commercial spaces, including food courts, retail outlets, premium office spaces, and a rooftop garden.
The tower will also include underground parking, charging stations for electric vehicles, and an outdoor café. The RLDA envisions the commercial complex as a public transport interchange, providing easy access to local buses, suburban trains, and the upcoming metro. The project is expected to significantly improve commuter facilities in the bustling Thane district. The commercial tower will be built on a plot of land measuring 79,659 square feet, at an estimated cost of INR 129 crore. Construction is expected to commence in mid-2025, with completion anticipated by early 2027.
The project aligns with the broader urban development goals of the Thane Municipal Corporation. The area surrounding Thane station is already a commercial hub, with numerous office buildings, residential complexes, and mixed-use developments. The new tower will further strengthen the region’s economic vitality and attract investments. The RLDA’s initiative in Thane is part of a larger effort to monetize railway land assets. Earlier this week, the authority invited bids for the leasing of over two acres of land in Mahalaxmi, near Shakti Mills. This prime property is expected to generate substantial revenue for the RLDA.
The commercial complex at Thane station follows a similar project at Vashi railway station, which has been a successful venture for the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The Vashi complex, comprising seven towers and covering 300,000 square feet, has been a landmark in the region since its completion in 1998. The RLDA’s efforts to develop commercial projects on railway land are a testament to its commitment to sustainable urban development and efficient land utilization. These initiatives not only generate revenue but also contribute to the overall growth and development of the city.
