Nepal Rapti Highway Landslide Blocks Road Stranding Hundreds in Salyan

Chor Khola in Kapurkot Rural Municipality-3, Salyan District, blocking both lanes of the Rapti Highway.

The landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, stranded hundreds of passengers and vehicles on both sides of the road. Local authorities responded promptly to the situation. A JCB machine from a construction contractor involved in the Rapti Highway Upgradation Project was deployed to clear the debris. However, machinery from the Department of Roads did not arrive on time. According to DSP Keshar Neupane of the District Police Office, Salyan, the road was fully operational after about three hours of efforts.

While an alternative motor route had been used for small vehicles, the route is currently open to all types of vehicles. The incident highlights the vulnerability of the Rapti Highway to landslides, especially during the monsoon season. The Rapti Highway, a crucial link connecting various districts in Nepal, has been prone to landslides and roadblocks in recent years. Continuous rainfall and ongoing road construction projects have exacerbated the situation, leading to frequent disruptions.

Authorities are urged to take preventive measures to mitigate the risk of landslides and ensure the safety and convenience of travelers.
