The Nehru Nagar zone has been officially declared tanker-free. This milestone, reached under the auspices of the Public Health Engineering Department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), signifies a major shift in the area’s water distribution system.
Effective from September 1, the NMC has ceased the operation of 34 water tankers previously assigned to Nehru Nagar, marking a significant improvement in local water delivery. The transition to a tanker-free system in Nehru Nagar has been facilitated through the AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) schemes. Under AMRUT 1.0 and 2.0, the NMC has developed a comprehensive pipeline network across several previously underserved areas within Ward 26. This network includes localities such as Sarode Nagar, New Sangam Nagar, and Shivam Society, among others.
A key infrastructure project was the construction of a 20-lakh-litre water tank at Wathoda (Chandmari Road) under AMRUT 1.0, complemented by approximately 15 kilometres of new pipelines laid through both AMRUT 1.0 and 2.0. The phased rollout of these pipelines has enabled residents to receive metered tap water connections, significantly reducing reliance on tankers. Prior to this, zones like Mangalwari and Dhantoli, as well as areas including Hudkeshwar-Narasala, had already achieved tanker-free status. The NMC plans to extend this progress to Dharampeth and Gandhibagh zones in the near future. Currently, the highest number of tankers, at 64, are still deployed in Ashi Nagar and Satranjipura zones. However, efforts are underway to withdraw 13 tankers from Lakadganj and eight from Satranjipura zones by the end of the month.
The successful transition of Nehru Nagar to a tanker-free water supply system represents a significant milestone in Nagpur’s water infrastructure development. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of the AMRUT schemes in improving urban water management and reducing dependency on water tankers. With ongoing efforts to extend tanker-free status to additional zones, the NMC is poised to further enhance the city’s water distribution network, ultimately improving the quality of life for its residents and setting a benchmark for other urban areas.
