MUMBAI: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted rescue operations to save 49 individuals stranded at a waterlogged resort in Thane and 16 villagers in Palghar amid persistent heavy rains on Sunday. The operations were part of the broader monsoon preparedness measures across Maharashtra.
In Thane’s Shahpur area, the NDRF deployed boats and life jackets to evacuate those trapped in the resort due to flooding. The prompt response by the NDRF team ensured the safe extraction of all 49 people, showcasing the preparedness and efficiency of the disaster response unit. Similarly, in Palghar district, another NDRF team, along with local firefighters, rescued 16 villagers from Chalispada of Saiwan in Vasai. These villagers, who were working on their farms, found themselves stranded when rising water levels from the nearby Tansa dam inundated the area. Heavy rainfall in the catchment area earlier in the morning had led to the sudden increase in water levels. The district disaster management cell was alerted, and the NDRF and local firefighting teams were mobilised around 12:30 pm. The rescue operation, which included eight women among the villagers, was completed within two hours, ensuring their safe evacuation from the flooded farms.
As part of ongoing monsoon preparedness efforts, the NDRF has stationed multiple teams across Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts. These teams, each comprising 32 to 35 personnel, are equipped to handle emergencies arising from the seasonal rains. In total, there are 13 teams deployed in various parts of Maharashtra, including Satara, Sangli, and Kolhapur, with additional support from five teams based at the NDRF headquarters in Pune. The successful rescue operations highlight the critical role of the NDRF in managing and mitigating the impacts of natural disasters. The swift and coordinated efforts of the NDRF and local authorities underscore the importance of preparedness and timely response in safeguarding lives during the monsoon season.
These incidents also reflect the broader challenge posed by the monsoon rains in the region, necessitating continuous vigilance and effective disaster management strategies to protect vulnerable communities. The NDRF’s presence and proactive measures are vital in addressing such emergencies and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in flood-prone areas.
