Navi Mumbai’s Orange Metro Line to Connect Kalyan-Taloja

The ambitious Orange Metro Line 12, a crucial infrastructure project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity in Navi Mumbai, is slated for completion by December 31, 2027. Spanning an impressive 23.756 kilometres, the metro corridor will connect Kalyan to Taloja, providing a seamless transit solution for the region’s growing population.

Executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the project has already made significant strides in terms of planning and contracting. A consortium consisting of SYSTRA SA and DB Engineering & Consultancy GmbH has been appointed as the general consultant, tasked with overseeing the project’s design and construction supervision. Meanwhile, the detailed design consultant role has been awarded to M/s LKT-Enia JV, with their contract commencing on November 1, 2023. The construction of the viaduct and stations has been entrusted to M/s Gawar Construction Pvt Ltd., with the contract period scheduled from April 1, 2024, to September 30, 2026. This collaboration signals a well-coordinated effort to meet the December 2027 deadline.

One of the notable features of the Metro Line 12 is the inclusion of two interchange stations—one with Mumbai Metro Line 5 at Kalyan APMC and another with Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 at Amandoot (Taloja). These interchanges are expected to improve connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, offering passengers easy transfers between different metro lines. In addition to the corridor, a significant depot-cum-workshop facility is being planned at Nilje Gaon, near Vadavali Station. Covering an area of 30.12 hectares, this depot will be equipped to handle major overhauls, minor repairs, heavy equipment replacements, and testing. It will include 12 stabling lines, three inspection/maintenance lines, and four workshop lines. The facility is designed to accommodate the growing number of trains, with the capacity to handle up to 24 rakes of six-car trains.

MMRDA has already acquired 57 hectares of government land for the construction of the depot and related activities. Further land acquisition for stretches not yet available is being coordinated with local authorities, including the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Panvel Municipal Corporation, and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The completion of the Orange Metro Line 12 is expected to significantly ease traffic woes in the region, facilitating smoother commutes between Kalyan and Taloja, while contributing to the region’s urban development goals.
