Navi Mumbai Woman Rescued After Car Falls into Creek
A 29-year-old woman from Kharghar narrowly escaped tragedy after her car plunged into Belapur Creek early on Friday morning. The woman, who was driving to her destination, mistakenly followed directions from Google Maps that led her down a road which ended at the creek. Despite the danger, the quick response from local coastal security officers saved her life.
At approximately 1 a.m., the woman took a left turn near the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) headquarters, thinking the road would lead her to a bridge. However, the path she followed, suggested by her navigation app, led her under the bridge and directly to a dead-end at the Belapur creek jetty. As she continued driving, her car fell around 10 feet into the water. Coastal security officers stationed at the jetty spotted the vehicle heading toward the creek and quickly signalled for her to stop. Unfortunately, before she could respond, her car plunged into the water. Within moments, the woman was seen outside the vehicle, struggling to remain afloat amidst the high tide. The Indian Rescue Team from Atal Setu arrived at the scene within two minutes, rescued her onto a boat, and brought her to safety.
Though the woman did not suffer any physical injuries, she appeared traumatised by the ordeal. She was taken to the NRI coastal police station, where her statement was recorded. Initially, she did not mention the use of Google Maps, but later clarified to officials that the navigation app had caused her confusion. Instead of following the directions to the bridge, she unknowingly drove along the service road that led to the jetty. This incident has raised important questions about the reliability of digital navigation systems, particularly in areas where infrastructure can be misleading. The police have urged the public to exercise caution when relying solely on navigation apps, especially in unfamiliar areas, and to be mindful of road signs and local knowledge.
The swift action of the coastal security team was praised for preventing what could have been a fatal accident. This case highlights the growing need for better signage and clearer instructions in areas with complex road systems, like Belapur Creek, to ensure commuter safety.
