Navi Mumbai commuters on the Seawoods–Belapur–Uran suburban line are set to benefit from a major service enhancement, as Central Railway plans to introduce 20 additional local trains from October. This expansion, comprising 10 up and 10 down services, will raise the total frequency on the route from 40 to 60 daily trains, easing congestion and improving connectivity in anticipation of the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).
Currently, trains on this corridor operate at hourly intervals during peak hours and every 90 minutes off-peak. Passenger traffic has historically been lower than on the main, harbour, and trans-harbour lines. However, with NMIA nearing operational readiness and the completion of Targhar railway station, CR officials anticipate a significant surge in ridership, making the additional services timely and necessary. Belapur remains the busiest station on this route, accommodating roughly 1.35 lakh daily riders, followed by Nerul (93,731), Seawoods Darave (52,016), Bamandongri (19,867), Kharkopar (12,684), Nhava Sheva (4,067), Dronagiri (2,103), and Uran. Experts suggest that the increased train frequency will substantially reduce waiting times, alleviate platform crowding, and enhance commuter experience along this rapidly developing corridor.
In parallel, CIDCO is advancing the Metro 8 project, which will link Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) with NMIA. The metro line, forming part of the planned 337 km Mumbai Metropolitan Region metro network managed by MMRDA, is projected to span approximately 35 km at an estimated cost of Rs 15,000 crore. Consultants have been appointed to revisit the alignment and integration strategy to optimise connectivity across the city’s transport ecosystem. Once operational, Metro 8 is expected to reduce travel time between the two airports to just 30 minutes, offering a sustainable and rapid transit alternative. CIDCO will oversee construction within its jurisdiction in collaboration with MMRDA, while final alignment and station plans will be developed in consultation with stakeholders to ensure minimal environmental disruption and enhanced commuter safety.
Officials emphasise that both the local train expansion and metro development are part of a broader strategy to provide eco-friendly, gender-neutral, and equitable transit solutions. By enhancing frequency, integrating different modes of transport, and preparing for future demand, these projects aim to decongest road traffic, reduce carbon emissions, and support sustainable urban mobility in Navi Mumbai. The additional train services are expected to commence in October, aligning with NMIA’s phased operations. This strategic upgrade reinforces Central Railway’s commitment to modernising suburban rail infrastructure and ensuring that the city’s growing workforce and travellers can navigate the region efficiently, safely, and sustainably.
