Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will officially take flight with budget carrier IndiGo as its inaugural airline partner. With the announcement made jointly by the airport operator and the airline, it has been confirmed that IndiGo will commence operations with 36 daily flight movements—18 arrivals and 18 departures—connecting Navi Mumbai to over 15 cities from day one.
While the exact date of inauguration remains undisclosed, the groundwork for full-fledged operations is clearly underway. According to a recent NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued by the Airports Authority of India, NMIA’s runway will remain unavailable for flight operations until 7 August 2025. This indicates that scheduled services are unlikely to begin before late August or September, given the usual lag between formal inauguration and passenger operations. The first phase of IndiGo’s ramp-up at NMIA will see a sharp escalation to 150 flight movements by November 2025, including 14 international departures. The expansion will continue into March 2026 with 100 daily departures, eventually reaching 140 daily departures and 30 international flights by November 2026.
The move is being hailed as a strategic leap toward decongesting the overburdened Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and enhancing Mumbai’s role as a premier aviation hub. The dual-airport system will not only boost regional connectivity but also support sustainable urban mobility and economic growth.Airport officials emphasised that the NMIA project is designed for long-term capacity, with the first phase ready to handle 20 million passengers annually and 0.8 million metric tonnes of cargo. Once fully operational, the facility will scale up to accommodate 90 million passengers and over 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo every year. Spread across 1,160 hectares, NMIA will feature parallel runways, energy-efficient terminal buildings, and modern cargo-handling infrastructure.
The airport is being developed under a Public Private Partnership model. Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (NMIAL), the special purpose vehicle spearheading the project, is a joint venture where Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL) holds a 74% stake through Mumbai International Airport Ltd, while the Maharashtra government’s City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) retains 26%.IndiGo’s CEO reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to shaping NMIA into a pivotal transfer hub for both domestic and international travellers. AAHL’s leadership echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project as a catalyst for regional and national growth, as well as a future-ready solution for India’s rising aviation demand.
With its focus on efficient operations, affordable connectivity, and reduced travel congestion, the Navi Mumbai airport is poised to be a model of sustainable, equitable, and climate-conscious infrastructure. As India’s urban centres prepare for climate resilience and inclusive growth, the NMIA-IndiGo partnership sets the tone for the next generation of greenfield airports that prioritise both scalability and sustainability.
