Navi Mumbai Takes on Intensive Weekend Clean-Up Across Key Areas

Navi Mumbai has taken a proactive step towards enhancing cleanliness in the city with a comprehensive cleaning drive conducted over the recent weekend. Organised by the Solid Waste Management Department and Swachh Maharashtra Abhiyan unit, under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, the campaign targeted neglected and often overlooked areas, complementing the daily maintenance efforts.

The cleaning operation, which took place during the public holidays on Saturday and Sunday, focused on areas in need of immediate attention. One of the primary focal points was the Sion-Panvel Highway, which, though not under the jurisdiction of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), was included in the drive due to its critical location within the city limits. The drive’s primary tasks included the removal of hardened soil from footpaths, clearing overgrown tree branches, and collecting dried leaves and debris. Specific stretches of the city, including the LP Junction to Nerul Railway Station, Nerul Railway Station to Haware Junction, and Haware Junction to Apollo Junction, were intensively cleaned. Key roads along with the Sion-Panvel Highway also received attention to ensure a holistic approach to city cleanliness. To further enhance cleanliness, the cleaned areas were washed using water sprayed through advanced fogging machines deployed by the NMMC.

The water used in this operation was sourced from the city’s Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), ensuring that recycled and treated water contributed to the cleaning process. This method not only ensured thorough cleaning but also played a crucial role in reducing dust levels, minimising air pollution, and improving the overall air quality in the vicinity. Dr. Kailas Shinde, Municipal Commissioner of Navi Mumbai, highlighted the significance of these deep cleaning drives alongside regular maintenance efforts. “These intensive cleaning campaigns, though additional to routine cleaning, are crucial in maintaining cleanliness across the city. Even though the Sion-Panvel Highway falls outside our jurisdiction, we included it as part of the city cleaning effort,” he noted. A similar deep cleaning initiative was also carried out in the Turbhe ward office area, ensuring that all major zones within the city were addressed. With continued focus on maintaining cleanliness, Navi Mumbai is setting a new standard in urban cleanliness, contributing to a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for its residents.
