The Navi Mumbai Traffic Department has announced a temporary closure of a crucial service road near the Targhar Bridge, close to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The closure, scheduled from 12:01 am on 25 November until midnight on 1 December, is part of preparatory repair work aimed at ensuring seamless access to the airport once it becomes operational.
According to a senior traffic official, the affected stretch extends from the cut preceding the Targhar Bridge to the junction where Loop Way A and Loop Way B merge. The repairs include resurfacing, structural reinforcement, and other necessary upgrades to handle increased traffic volumes expected post-airport launch. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Tirupati Kakade, emphasised the importance of timely intervention, noting that “the repairs are critical to guarantee safe and efficient connectivity to NMIA. Public cooperation with temporary restrictions will be essential to minimise disruption.” The civic authorities have coordinated closely with the airport and urban planning departments to ensure that the works are conducted in compliance with safety and sustainability norms.
To reduce inconvenience for commuters, a diversion has been put in place. Vehicles will be rerouted via Gavhan Fata–Belapur Road, proceed to Killa Junction, and then continue to their destinations. “The diversion has been designed to balance uninterrupted repair work with minimum commuter inconvenience,” said a senior traffic branch official overseeing the operation. Industry experts note that such pre-operational road improvements are critical to long-term urban mobility planning, particularly in high-density satellite towns like Navi Mumbai. Efficient access to NMIA will not only facilitate passenger flow but also support the growth of adjacent commercial and residential areas, creating economic opportunities while adhering to sustainable urban design principles.
The Traffic Department has confirmed that enforcement teams will monitor the closure throughout the week, ensuring that vehicles adhere to the diversion routes. Officials have also urged citizens to plan travel accordingly, particularly during peak hours, to avoid congestion in nearby areas. The initiative is part of broader urban infrastructure upgrades in Navi Mumbai aimed at preparing the city for large-scale commercial developments. While temporary disruptions are inevitable, authorities highlight that the repairs will ultimately provide safer, more reliable transport infrastructure for residents, commuters, and visitors alike.
