Navi Mumbai Roads To Remain Closed For Eid-E-Milad Traffic Diversions Today

The city is preparing for major traffic diversions on September 8 as thousands are expected to join the Eid Milad procession from Ghansoli to Koparkhairane. Authorities have issued a detailed plan to ensure the religious celebrations take place peacefully without paralysing daily life for commuters.

The annual procession, organised by community groups, will move from Ghansoli Dargah to Sachi Hotel in Koparkhairane. According to officials, the event is expected to attract large crowds supported by eight to ten tempos, several horse-drawn carriages, nearly 20 cars and jeeps, and over a hundred motorcycles. Residents from neighbourhoods such as Airoli, Rabale, Chinchpada, Ghansoli, Digha, and Koparkhairane are likely to participate in significant numbers. For commuters, this translates into planned closures along stretches including Rekha Sweet Home to Sachi Hotel Road, Thane-Belapur Road, Motor Lane, Vashi Naka, Janta Market, and Kopri Bridge. Restrictions will be in place from noon until the conclusion of the procession. While office-goers and small businesses fear congestion, traffic officials have assured that coordination measures will balance religious participation with civic convenience.

Authorities have activated a dedicated traffic helpline and email support to respond to citizen queries and emergencies. Officials confirmed that emergency vehicles will be given priority passage and will not face restrictions during the procession. Real-time monitoring has also been planned, with traffic personnel stationed along key routes to guide motorists. Residents in Koparkhairane say they are bracing for delays but welcome the advance notification, which allows them to plan ahead. Auto-rickshaw drivers and shopkeepers in Ghansoli acknowledge that the diversions may impact their earnings for the day but emphasise that clear instructions from the police could prevent chaos.

Officials highlighted that the arrangements are designed to ensure the event reflects both devotion and discipline. “Our teams are deployed on the ground to guide commuters. The priority is to celebrate with harmony while ensuring daily life is not disrupted,” an official from the traffic department said. Urban mobility experts note that such temporary diversions, when managed effectively, demonstrate how cities can respect cultural traditions while maintaining civic order. They argue that transparent communication, advance planning, and use of technology for traffic regulation can turn challenges into opportunities for inclusive urban governance.

With large-scale participation anticipated, Navi Mumbai will be closely watched on Monday as it attempts to strike a fine balance—celebrating religious heritage while keeping its roads safe, accessible, and manageable for all.
