Navi Mumbai Metro to link airport, boost sustainable travel

To reshape the urban transport landscape of Navi Mumbai, Metro Line 1 is now poised for a vital extension from Pendhar to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

This 3.02-kilometre corridor will introduce a key interchange at Sagarsangam, unlocking seamless last-mile connectivity for air travellers and bridging critical transit gaps across residential, industrial and commercial zones. The move signals a leap forward in integrated urban mobility and represents a broader commitment to sustainable, low-emission transport in one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing regions. Currently, the 11.1-kilometre Metro Line 1 has been in operation since late 2023, offering a reliable connection from CBD Belapur to Taloja MIDC. For thousands of daily commuters, it has quickly become an essential lifeline, reducing travel times and easing traffic congestion on arterial roads. With the extension, residents and air passengers alike stand to benefit from a direct link to the airport, addressing a long-standing need for last-mile public transport access in an area slated for rapid infrastructural growth.

The infrastructure behind this metro expansion has been designed with both scale and sustainability in mind. A centralised Operations Control Centre is already operational, enabling real-time monitoring and driver training, which enhances both system safety and service responsiveness. Moreover, the city’s forward-looking mobility agenda is reflected in the use of solar-powered stations and regenerative braking technology, which not only cut operational emissions but also reduce long-term energy costs. These efforts are aligned with Maharashtra’s ambitious green mobility goals and could set the stage for future metro projects across the state.

Plans for further metro lines are already on the drawing board. Metro Line 2 is expected to connect Pendhar with the eastern end of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, while Metro Line 8 is envisioned as a high-speed link from NMIA to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, passing through urban hubs such as Nerul, Vashi and Kurla. If completed as proposed, this corridor could significantly compress inter-airport travel times, elevating the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s connectivity to international standards. Urban planners argue that the success of these investments will hinge on effective last-mile linkages, including feeder buses, bike lanes and shared mobility solutions that will help ensure equitable access and maximise ridership.

The broader impact of this metro extension extends beyond transportation. By strengthening the backbone of public mobility, the project paves the way for transit-oriented development and more inclusive urban planning. It offers a compelling alternative to private vehicles, potentially reducing the city’s carbon footprint and making daily commuting more efficient and affordable. As the Navi Mumbai metro network grows, it has the potential to become a model of how infrastructure and environmental priorities can co-exist, offering valuable lessons for other Indian cities aspiring to achieve climate-conscious urban development.
