Navi Mumbai Metro Line-1 Set to Begin Soon After Safety Inspection

The Navi Mumbai Metro (NMM) Line-1 is all set to commence operations soon after undergoing a Metro rail safety inspection. The first phase of NMM Line-1 will run an 11.1 km stretch between Belapur and Pendhar, covering 11 stations including Belapur, Science Park, Utsav Chowk, Central Park and Pendhar Terminal.

The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco), the nodal agency for the project, recently received the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) certificate for the Belapur-Kharghar stretch, paving the way for the line to become operational. Cidco had previously invited tenders for government agencies to construct the Metro, including operations and maintenance, with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) offering to undertake the engineering work only. As a result, MahaMetro was appointed to handle construction and operations.

The NMM Line-1 faced a 12-year delay but recently conducted a successful trial run for a 5 km corridor spanning five stations from Pendhar to Central Park. Once operational, the transit network is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and provide faster and improved connectivity to residents in areas such as Taloja, Ghot, Koyanaville villages and surrounding localities.

The NMM project is also expected to benefit major housing projects in Kharghar and elevate the real estate market in the area by increasing housing demand. Moreover, the improved connectivity is set to attract new residents and bring benefits to Belapur which is a significant commercial and business district in Navi Mumbai.
