Navi Mumbai’s long-awaited international airport is moving a step closer to commercial operations, with industry sources indicating that ticket bookings for its first set of flights may open shortly after mid-November. The development marks a major milestone for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which has been preparing for a second gateway to address growing passenger demand and ease the heavy traffic burden on Mumbai’s existing international airport.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), inaugurated earlier this year, has been designed as India’s largest greenfield aviation project with an aim to introduce smarter, more energy-efficient terminal operations. According to officials familiar with the project, airlines have begun completing their operational groundwork in anticipation of a phased launch of domestic services by late 2025. The airport is expected to play a decisive role in distributing air traffic more evenly across the region while supporting future-oriented mobility and economic growth. Several domestic carriers are preparing to be part of the launch phase. Industry insiders note that airlines have started aligning their schedules and fleet plans with the airport’s expected opening timeline. One airline is preparing up to 18 daily departures to major cities, while another is planning 20 flights a day. A third airline, which has been expanding aggressively in the domestic aviation market, is expected to operate more than 100 weekly services initially before growing to over 300 domestic and 50 international services by the winter season of 2026. These early commitments reflect the industry’s confidence in NMIA’s long-term strategic relevance.
A senior aviation official said the opening of bookings would be a clear indicator that the operational stage of the project has entered its final stretch. The airport has already been assigned its IATA code and has completed several compliance processes required for commissioning. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has taken charge of airport security, beginning with around 900 personnel in the first phase and gradually scaling up to 1,800 officers. Beyond easing congestion, urban planners emphasise that NMIA is designed to support sustainable development principles, including improved surface connectivity, energy-efficient building systems, and integrated transport access. The airport is expected to strengthen Navi Mumbai’s positioning as a business and logistics hub, enabling more balanced urban expansion across the metropolitan region.
Experts note that the airport’s progress reflects a shift toward more decentralised, climate-conscious infrastructure planning in India’s megacities. The new facility is anticipated to reduce travel pressure on existing terminals at Mumbai’s international airport, cut travel times for residents in Navi Mumbai, and promote more equitable access to regional mobility networks.
