Navi Mumbai Airport Starting December 25 Services As Akasa Opens Four Bookings

Navi Mumbai’s long-awaited international airport is set to welcome passengers from 25 December, marking a significant milestone in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s transport capacity expansion. With operations beginning in a limited twelve-hour window, the airport’s initial services are expected to ease pressure on Mumbai’s existing aviation infrastructure while improving regional accessibility for both business and leisure travellers.

Akasa Air has become the first airline to open reservations for flights connecting the new airport with Delhi, Goa (Mopa), Kochi, and Ahmedabad. Daily services will link Navi Mumbai with Delhi and Goa, while Kochi will see five weekly departures. Ahmedabad, meanwhile, will initially be connected through a weekly flight, according to information shared with travel partners. Industry observers note that these routes have been chosen for their high passenger demand and potential to support early traffic stability at the greenfield airport. The airport was inaugurated recently by the country’s top leadership and has been positioned as a critical infrastructure asset for the rapidly growing metropolitan region. An aviation official said the opening represents a “structural shift in Mumbai’s mobility ecosystem,” allowing the eastern and southern suburbs faster air access and reducing dependence on the congested Santacruz terminal. The official added that the phased operational plan provides room for progressive scaling without overloading systems in the early months.

During its first month, the airport will handle operations between 8 am and 8 pm, with the capacity to accommodate 8–10 aircraft movements per hour. This is expected to rise gradually to 20 movements per hour and later to 30 as systems stabilise, staffing increases, and airlines expand their schedules. Industry experts believe the measured approach will allow operators to test systems such as automated baggage handling, air traffic management, and multimodal passenger dispersal. Urban mobility analysts say the airport’s opening is also a chance to improve sustainable transit planning for Navi Mumbai. With a metro corridor under development, feeder bus routes being mapped, and last-mile connectivity proposals under review, the airport’s catchment is expected to evolve as a model for low-emission, multimodal access. Transport experts emphasise that managing road congestion around the airport and prioritising public transport early on will be crucial for long-term sustainability.

The airport’s launch is also likely to stimulate economic activity across sectors including hospitality, logistics, and commercial real estate. With Navi Mumbai positioning itself as a decentralised business district, improved air connectivity may influence corporate relocation decisions, support tourism flows, and strengthen inter-city business travel. As the airport ramps up operations in the coming months, residents and businesses across the region are expected to gain from reduced travel times, enhanced connectivity, and a more balanced distribution of aviation demand—potentially easing the environmental and infrastructural strain currently borne by Mumbai’s primary airport.
