The milestone, achieved within 19 days of operations beginning in late December 2025, signals strong initial acceptance of the greenfield airport and reinforces its role as a critical mobility asset for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Between December 25 and January 12, the airport handled nearly 110,000 passengers across inbound and outbound journeys, supported by over 700 flight movements. Aviation planners view this early traffic build-up as an encouraging indicator for long-term demand redistribution from Mumbai’s saturated primary airport, particularly for domestic routes connecting major economic and tourism centres. Operational data shows that Delhi, Bengaluru, and Goa emerged as the most frequented destinations during the initial phase, reflecting both business and leisure travel demand. The airport also processed more than 22 tonnes of cargo, underlining its potential to support time-sensitive logistics and regional supply chains as services scale up.
Urban mobility experts note that the airport’s phased ramp-up aligns with global best practices for new aviation infrastructure, allowing systems, staffing, and surface connectivity to stabilise before full-capacity operations. This approach is expected to reduce congestion shocks while improving passenger experience and operational reliability. As one of two airports serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Navi Mumbai International Airport is strategically positioned to unlock new economic corridors across Navi Mumbai, Raigad, and parts of Pune district. Officials overseeing the project have indicated that services will be expanded gradually, with a continued focus on safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort. As flight frequencies increase and international services are introduced in subsequent phases, the airport’s early performance suggests it is on track to become a cornerstone of Mumbai’s next-generation transport ecosystem, supporting inclusive growth, employment generation, and more balanced urban development across the region.
