Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has completed its first full-scale passenger trial, a critical milestone ahead of its planned launch on 25 December. The exercise involved hundreds of volunteers who experienced the full passenger journey, allowing authorities to evaluate operational readiness, security protocols, and overall passenger flow. The trial marks a significant step in ensuring that the new airport can handle commercial operations efficiently while providing a seamless travel experience.
The two-day simulation encompassed check-in, security screening, boarding, and baggage retrieval, replicating real-world conditions. Airport officials monitored every stage to assess coordination among staff, effectiveness of technology systems, and potential bottlenecks. “This trial allowed us to evaluate all operational processes end-to-end and make adjustments to optimise passenger experience,” an official said. “Our teams worked closely with airlines, security personnel, and ground staff to ensure readiness for December operations.”
The trial included participation from IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express, highlighting the collaborative approach between NMIA and commercial carriers. Volunteers moved through multiple checkpoints under the supervision of airport authorities and security personnel, allowing the ORAT (Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer) team to identify gaps and refine procedures. Such simulations are increasingly standard for new airports globally, ensuring both operational efficiency and safety compliance before opening to the public.
The launch of NMIA is expected to significantly reduce congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which currently operates well beyond its designed capacity. Once operational, NMIA will connect Navi Mumbai with major cities including Delhi, Goa, Kochi, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow, supporting regional economic growth and improving accessibility for both business and leisure travellers.Constructed at a cost of INR 19,650 crore, NMIA is India’s largest greenfield airport project and among the most modern in the country.
