Nashik is set to witness a significant infrastructure overhaul as Indian Railways initiates a substantial ₹1,011 crore investment in preparation for the Simhastha 2027 mega-event. This proactive infrastructure push, drawing lessons from previous large-scale gatherings, aims to expand station capacities, introduce special train services, and implement advanced crowd management systems. The comprehensive upgrade underscores a strategic commitment to ensure seamless, safe, and sustainable urban mobility for the anticipated influx of millions, fostering a more equitable and efficient city experience.
The Ministry of Railways, following an extensive review involving senior officials, has commenced advance preparations to bolster connectivity to the Mela area. An integrated plan has been devised to expand the capacity of key stations across the region, with the primary objective of ensuring streamlined passenger movement during the Nashik Simhastha 2027. Officials have been urged to adopt best practices gleaned from the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh experience, focusing on developing adequate facilities and sufficient stabling capacity at all nearby stations to manage the immense pilgrim traffic efficiently.
The ambitious infrastructure works, projected to cost over ₹1,011 crore, are concentrated at five pivotal stations within the Mela vicinity: Nashik Road, Devlali, Odha, Kherwadi, and Kasbe Sukene. At Nashik Road, Platform 4 will be made bi-directional, and Platform 1 extended to accommodate 24-coach trains, complemented by a 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge. Devlali will see additional platforms and two 6-metre-wide FOBs, alongside advanced coach and wagon examination facilities and a Sewage Treatment Plant. Odha, Kherwadi, and Kasbe Sukene are also slated for significant upgrades including new platforms, FOBs, loop lines, and yard remodelling, all designed to enhance operational fluidity and passenger amenities.
With an anticipated footfall of over 3 crore pilgrims, nearly 50 times that of Simhastha 2015, Indian Railways is planning a significantly higher number of special trains. This includes long-distance special services and short-distance MEMU trains connecting Nashik to major cities across India, such as Kamakhya, Howrah, Patna, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. A unique round-trip special circuit train will also connect the three Jyotirlingas – Trimbakeshwar, Grishneshwar, and Omkareshwar – enhancing spiritual tourism and regional connectivity.
Crucially, large holding areas are being developed at each major station to ensure smooth pilgrim movement, supported by a proposed centralised command and control centre equipped with CCTV cameras and AI tools for predictive scheduling. This comprehensive infrastructure and operational enhancement for Simhastha 2027 is a testament to the commitment to sustainable urban development. By prioritising efficient, safe, and accessible public transport, the project not only facilitates a massive religious gathering but also lays the groundwork for a more resilient, eco-friendly, and equitable Nashik, benefiting all citizens by reducing congestion and promoting sustainable mobility.
