Nashik is embarking on a monumental infrastructure development drive, with a substantial ₹2,100 crore project earmarked for the comprehensive overhaul of its critical road network ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2027. This ambitious undertaking is not merely about accommodating the anticipated surge of devotees but also about laying the groundwork for a more robust, eco-friendly, and sustainable urban future. The strategic investments in transport and sanitation infrastructure underscore a proactive approach to city planning, aiming to enhance public health, manage environmental impact, and ensure equitable access for all.
The Nashik Municipal Corporation’s extensive plan targets the improvement of 61 crucial roads across the city, including vital stretches of the inner, middle, and outer ring roads that connect to national and state highways. This multi-phase project will also consider road widening where feasible, ensuring smoother traffic flow and reduced congestion during the mega event and beyond. The initial phase alone will focus on 23 key roads, with subsequent phases addressing another 29, including the historically significant Shahi Marg, and an additional three stretches. This phased approach allows for meticulous planning and execution, crucial for projects of such magnitude.
Beyond road infrastructure, a significant investment of approximately ₹1,475 crore has been allocated for critical sewage management projects. Contracts have already been awarded for the construction of new sewage treatment plants, pumping stations, and diversion infrastructure across 22 nullahs. This comprehensive sanitation initiative is pivotal for preventing pollution of the Godavari River, a sacred lifeline for the city, and ensuring public health during the Kumbh Mela. Such environmental safeguards align directly with the city’s commitment to zero net carbon and eco-friendly urban development, setting a precedent for managing large-scale gatherings responsibly.
The overall development blueprint, a comprehensive ₹15,000 crore plan, has been submitted to the state government for approval, with the public works department specifically requesting ₹4,000 crore for road works and the construction of nine new bridges. This substantial financial commitment highlights the strategic importance placed on enhancing Nashik’s urban fabric. Directives from state authorities to prioritise projects with a two-year completion timeline further underscore the urgency and foresight in preparing for the 2027 event, ensuring that essential infrastructure is in place well in advance.
