Nagpur Secures Rs 9 Billion Approval For Phase V Cement Road Project

Nagpur is set to witness a major upgrade in its urban transport infrastructure with the municipal corporation receiving state approval for Phase V of its cement road project, sanctioned at Rs 9 billion. The initiative will convert 135 major tar roads, spanning 89.22 km, into durable concrete stretches, enhancing connectivity and integrating climate-resilient measures such as rainwater harvesting to curb urban flooding and recharge groundwater.

Officials highlighted that Phase V builds on the infrastructure established in Phase IV, ensuring strategic connectivity between newly constructed concrete roads and existing urban networks. By combining long-term durability with sustainability, the project reflects a forward-looking approach to city planning that balances infrastructure needs with environmental considerations. The road development plan is structured zone-wise, demonstrating coordinated urban management and local planning. Ashi Nagar leads with 22 roads covering 16.49 km, followed by Dharampeth with 15.36 km and Nehru Nagar with 12.48 km. Hanuman Nagar’s 7.94 km allocation is planned to strengthen arterial routes, while Gandhibagh will receive 3.25 km of concrete roads. Other significant allocations include Mangalwari at 11.90 km, Lakadganj 13.35 km, Laxminagar 7.65 km, and Dhantoli 6.80 km.

Urban development experts emphasised that this phase of the project integrates resilience measures into the city’s transport grid. Rainwater harvesting systems embedded within the concrete roads aim to reduce stormwater runoff and supplement groundwater recharge, addressing both environmental and public utility concerns. The project also aims to ensure gender-neutral accessibility and equitable mobility for all citizens, contributing to Nagpur’s wider sustainable urban development goals. Officials noted that the new concrete stretches will reduce long-term maintenance costs compared to conventional asphalt roads. In addition, the improved durability will support heavier traffic loads and enhance road safety, benefiting both commuters and commercial transport operations. Analysts say that the strategic selection of zones and connectivity planning demonstrates an emphasis on inclusive urban growth while mitigating the impact of climate change on city infrastructure.

Phase V also underscores a model for other mid-sized Indian cities to combine urban resilience with infrastructure development. By linking durability, climate adaptation, and equitable urban mobility, Nagpur is positioning itself as a pioneer in sustainable urban transport planning. The project is expected to be completed over the next few years, with officials monitoring construction progress to ensure timely delivery and adherence to sustainability norms. Once completed, Phase V will serve as a benchmark for climate-resilient road infrastructure across the region.
