Nagpur Metro Phase Three DPR process gathers pace

Planning for the next expansion of urban rail infrastructure in Nagpur is moving forward as authorities prepare to begin groundwork for the detailed project report of the Nagpur Metro Phase 3 network. Officials overseeing the project say the next stage will involve selecting a consultant responsible for preparing the feasibility and design framework for the proposed metro expansion. According to transport authorities involved in the planning process, at least two consultancy organisations have expressed interest in undertaking the assignment. Once the consultant is finalised, preliminary studies and field assessments for the Nagpur Metro Phase 3 project are expected to begin in the coming months.

The detailed project report, commonly referred to as a DPR, serves as the technical foundation for major infrastructure developments such as metro systems. It evaluates passenger demand, route alignment options, environmental considerations and construction costs before projects move toward final approval and funding. Urban mobility experts say the early planning stage is critical for determining how effectively new metro corridors integrate with existing transport networks. In a rapidly growing city like Nagpur, expanding mass transit systems can play a key role in reducing road congestion and supporting more sustainable urban mobility. The city’s metro network, developed under Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited, has already introduced modern rail-based public transport across several parts of the city through earlier phases. Transport planners believe further expansion will be necessary as population growth, real estate development and commercial activity continue to increase travel demand. The proposed Nagpur Metro Phase 3 expansion is expected to examine new corridors linking emerging residential areas, industrial zones and educational hubs that currently depend heavily on road-based transport. By connecting these districts to the metro network, authorities aim to create a more balanced and integrated mobility system. Urban planners highlight that metro systems are increasingly viewed as essential infrastructure for climate-resilient cities. Rail-based public transport can reduce reliance on private vehicles, lower carbon emissions and improve air quality in densely populated urban environments. However, experts caution that large-scale metro projects require careful planning to ensure long-term viability. Factors such as ridership projections, land acquisition requirements and financial sustainability must be analysed thoroughly during the DPR stage. In addition to transport benefits, metro expansion often influences urban development patterns. Areas located near metro stations typically experience increased real estate activity, encouraging transit-oriented development that integrates housing, offices and public services within walkable neighbourhoods.

Authorities indicate that once the DPR preparation begins, technical teams will conduct route surveys, traffic demand assessments and environmental studies to evaluate the feasibility of the Nagpur Metro Phase 3 network. The process may take several months before final recommendations are submitted for approval. For Nagpur, which has positioned itself as a key logistics and economic centre in central India, expanding the metro network could strengthen urban connectivity while supporting long-term goals of sustainable and inclusive urban growth.
