Nagpur Metro Expansion Gains Momentum With Budget Support

Urban rail expansion in central India received a policy push after the Maharashtra government earmarked fresh funding for the Nagpur Metro Expansion, signalling continued support for the city’s growing rapid transit system while outlining a broader vision to build an extensive metro network across the state by 2047.

Budget documents for the 2026–27 fiscal year allocate ₹150 crore as the state’s equity contribution to the Nagpur metro project. The funding maintains the previous year’s level of support and forms part of a long-term transport strategy aimed at strengthening sustainable mobility across major urban centres in Maharashtra.Officials involved in metro planning say the investment reflects the state’s effort to shift large cities toward high-capacity public transport systems that can support rising urban populations while reducing congestion and carbon emissions. Rapid transit networks are increasingly seen as essential infrastructure for cities attempting to limit dependence on private vehicles. The Nagpur Metro Expansion is already progressing through multiple phases. The first phase of the project, spanning roughly 40 kilometres, is fully operational and connects several residential and commercial districts across the city. The network has helped establish Nagpur as one of the early tier-two cities in India to adopt a modern metro system.

Construction is currently underway for the second phase, which will add approximately 44 kilometres of new lines. These extensions aim to improve connectivity to emerging suburban areas and industrial zones, where population growth and employment centres are gradually reshaping the city’s urban geography.Planning has also begun for a third phase that could introduce about 55 kilometres of additional corridors. Authorities have initiated the process of appointing consultants to prepare a detailed project report that will examine route alignment, projected passenger demand and integration with existing transport systems. If all three phases are completed, the metro network could approach about 130 kilometres in the coming decades, with further extensions possible depending on urban growth patterns. Transport planners note that such long-term planning is crucial in cities like Nagpur, where development corridors are expanding toward the metropolitan edge.

The Nagpur Metro Expansion also forms part of a wider statewide mobility roadmap. Government estimates suggest metro rail projects covering roughly 490 kilometres are currently underway across Maharashtra’s major urban regions. Of these, more than 170 kilometres of lines are already operational, while additional corridors are expected to open in the next few years.By 2047, the state aims to develop nearly 1,200 kilometres of metro rail networks across multiple cities. Urban policy experts say the strategy reflects a shift toward transit-oriented development, where residential and commercial growth is aligned with mass transit infrastructure to create more compact and efficient cities. For Nagpur, continued metro expansion could shape how the city grows over the next two decades. Integrated planning between transport corridors, housing clusters and employment hubs will determine whether the metro system evolves into the backbone of a more sustainable and accessible urban mobility network.
