Nagpur Gondia Expressway Approved, ₹3162 Crore Project Cuts Travel Time

Maharashtra has cleared a transformative mobility project with the approval of the Nagpur–Gondia expressway, an access-controlled corridor expected to shrink travel time between the two cities from over three hours to just 75 minutes. The expressway, spread over 162.5 kilometres, is being undertaken by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) with an estimated land acquisition cost exceeding ₹3,160 crore.

Planned as a high-speed greenfield corridor, the route will pass through Nagpur, Bhandara and Gondia districts, touching 115 villages across 10 talukas. Beyond cutting travel time, the project is designed to link the eastern pockets of Maharashtra to the Nagpur–Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg, unlocking new industrial and trade opportunities for the Vidarbha region.Officials associated with the project explained that the alignment reduces the overall route length by nearly 15 kilometres while integrating a robust mix of modern infrastructure. The corridor will be equipped with 26 flyovers, 15 major bridges, 63 minor bridges and 71 culverts. To ensure ecological safeguards, the blueprint also includes eight dedicated wildlife underpasses to reduce human-animal conflict in forested areas.Interchanges have been carefully mapped at Gavsi, Pachgaon, Thana, Rotary, Panjara, Paldongri, Lohari and Savari, enabling smoother local connectivity. The corridor design further integrates bypasses and link roads, including a 13.7 km Gondia outer bypass and a 3.7 km Tiroda link road, to reduce congestion inside key settlements.

Beyond infrastructure, the expressway is being positioned as a driver of social and economic change. Experts said the connectivity will help open up some of Vidarbha’s most underserved and tribal-dominated regions to mainstream growth. The faster corridor is expected to improve movement of goods, encourage industries to set up clusters, and create new jobs in logistics, agriculture, and allied sectors.Planners also highlight the environmental dimension of the project. The expressway is expected to integrate energy-efficient lighting, digital tolling systems, and provisions for solar-powered infrastructure. Authorities have stated that eco-friendly practices will be embedded during construction, in line with India’s commitment towards sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure development.

Regional planners argue that this project will be a critical step in balancing Maharashtra’s growth beyond its urbanised western corridor. By enhancing road connectivity in Vidarbha, the state is positioning Nagpur as an emerging logistics hub while creating equitable access for Gondia and Bhandara. While timelines for completion have not yet been specified, officials emphasise that the expressway is a strategic investment that will reshape travel patterns, reduce economic disparities, and redefine mobility in eastern Maharashtra. If implemented with ecological sensitivity, the Nagpur–Gondia expressway could emerge as a model of inclusive, sustainable infrastructure for India’s future cities.
