Nagaland Monsoon Rains Claims Lives Grounds Flights and Floods 70 Villages

Nagaland is in the grip of a severe monsoon crisis as days of unrelenting rain have flooded vast stretches of land and triggered deadly accidents across the state. The worst-affected districts—Dimapur Kohima and Niuland—are dealing with collapsed infrastructure waterlogged villages and disrupted air and road connectivity.

Three people including a woman lost their lives in Dimapur’s Burma Camp and Kuda Village after being electrocuted in their homes as floodwaters surged into residential areas. Several localities such as Half Nagarjan were submerged under three feet of water forcing evacuations. Although rainfall paused briefly on Monday authorities remain on high alert with the India Meteorological Department warning of continued heavy showers across the region. Flight operations at Dimapur Airport came to a standstill as floodwaters entered the runway and parking bays. Airlines including IndiGo and Air India Express canceled multiple flights while passengers were urged to check directly with carriers. The National Highway 29 linking Dimapur to Kohima has also been partially cut off by landslides putting essential supplies and commuters at risk.

In Niuland the situation is especially grim with around 70 villages hit hard by the floods. Reports indicate widespread damage to homes agricultural land bridges and fisheries raising concerns about food shortages if the rains persist. Officials say the state’s already fragile rural economy could be severely impacted if relief measures are delayed. The State Disaster Management Authority and district administrations are on alert with emergency meetings underway to prepare a coordinated response. Rescue teams have been deployed and dry food and essential supplies are being mobilised for affected areas. Residents have been advised to avoid flood zones and remain indoors as more rainfall is expected throughout the week.

This monsoon has turned into a full-blown crisis for Nagaland exposing deep vulnerabilities in infrastructure planning and emergency preparedness while leaving thousands in urgent need of relief.
