Mysuru is likely to gain long-awaited direct air connectivity with Mumbai, as discussions advance between aviation authorities and a private airline to launch flight services linking the two cities. The proposed route is expected to give a significant push to Mysuru’s tourism and business sectors while filling a critical gap in regional connectivity across southern India.
Currently, Mysuru Airport operates only limited flights connecting Chennai and Hyderabad. The absence of direct links to Mumbai, India’s financial capital, has been a long-standing concern for local industries and tourism stakeholders. Officials confirmed that the new air service proposal has moved forward, with flight slots already secured, signalling that the operation could commence soon. Industry experts say the addition of a Mumbai route will not only connect Mysuru to one of the busiest aviation hubs in India but also strengthen its growing business ecosystem. They highlighted that travellers bound for destinations such as Pune and Shirdi would benefit from the improved connectivity. “Passenger demand for this route has been consistent for years. A direct flight to Mumbai could enhance corporate travel, improve logistics efficiency, and drive investment interest in Mysuru’s expanding industrial and IT zones,” said a tourism industry expert.
Aviation analysts point out that improved regional connectivity is essential for balanced economic development in Tier-2 cities. With Mysuru emerging as a hub for heritage tourism, technology services, and education, the city’s integration with Mumbai’s business corridors could accelerate both tourism growth and enterprise mobility. Moreover, a direct route could reduce travel time significantly, cutting out the need for passengers to transit through Bengaluru or Hyderabad airports. Stakeholders have also called for extending air services to additional destinations such as Goa and Kochi to create a more comprehensive southern connectivity network. Industry bodies have urged that the existing Mysuru–Hyderabad service could be extended westwards to Goa to tap into strong leisure and business travel demand between the two regions.
Alongside the push for air routes, civic and commuter groups have appealed to transport authorities to consider extending the Mumbai–Bengaluru Udyan Express train service to Mysuru, ensuring multiple travel options between the cities. They argued that better multimodal connectivity would reduce travel fatigue, diversify passenger choices, and promote sustainable, low-carbon travel alternatives in the long term. The upcoming air link marks a strategic step in Mysuru’s efforts to align itself with national aviation and regional development goals. It also reflects a growing recognition of smaller cities’ role in decentralising economic activity from major metros. For Mysuru—a city that combines cultural heritage with modern enterprise—the new Mumbai flight could open fresh opportunities for tourism-led growth, business expansion, and inclusive mobility within southern India’s evolving transport landscape.
