Mumbai’s water reservoirs are currently operating at near-capacity levels, with recent data revealing that the city’s seven primary lakes are at 96.84% of their total useful water capacity.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) disclosed these figures in a recent update, highlighting a significant boost in water availability due to the current monsoon season. The total useful water content across Mumbai’s reservoirs stands at approximately 14,47,363 million litres, reflecting an impressive utilisation rate. Notably, Modak-Sagar Lake is almost full, with 99.54% of its water stock available, while Tansa Lake holds 98.29% of its capacity.
Other lakes such as Middle Vaitarna and Upper Vaitarna are also showing high levels, with 98.86% and 96.81% respectively. Bhatsa Lake is slightly lower at 95.37%, but still contributes significantly to the city’s water supply. Both Vihar and Tulsi Lakes have reached full capacity, standing at 100%. The high water levels have been attributed to substantial rainfall this season. Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4, followed by Vihar and Modak-Sagar Lakes, which started flooding on July 25. Tansa Lake, which is crucial for the city’s water supply, overflowed on July 24, significantly boosting the reservoir levels.
Tulsi Lake also overflowed on July 20, mirroring last year’s overflow timing. These overflowing reservoirs have contributed an additional 17 days’ worth of water to the city’s supply in just one day, underscoring the monsoon’s impact on water availability. Tansa Lake, in particular, plays a critical role, providing approximately 400 million gallons of water daily to Mumbai. The robust water levels are expected to bolster Mumbai’s water security, easing concerns about water shortages and ensuring a stable supply for the city’s residents.
