Mumbai’s Water Stock Could Hit 100% Soon

Mumbai is poised to see a significant boost in its water stock as the catchment areas supplying the city’s lakes have experienced consistent rainfall. On Monday, civic officials reported that while the rain was moderate, it has positively impacted the city’s water reserves.

Forecasts suggest that the catchment areas will continue to receive substantial rainfall, potentially leading to a full capacity water stock by the end of this month. Currently, Mumbai’s water stock stands at 14.05 lakh million litres, with the total holding capacity of its lakes at 14.47 lakh million litres. The city had faced a 10 per cent water cut from June to August due to a delay in the monsoon. However, the situation began improving from mid-July as the catchment areas started receiving heavy rainfall.

The recent rains, though not torrential, have contributed to an increase in water levels, providing a much-needed respite. According to a civic official, “While Monday’s rainfall was not particularly heavy, it has been beneficial. Moreover, with the forecast predicting continued rain, there is a strong possibility that the water stock could reach 100 per cent by the end of this month.” This anticipated increase in water levels comes as a relief to Mumbai, which had been grappling with water shortages earlier in the season. The civic authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are optimistic about achieving full reservoir capacity, which would ensure a stable water supply for the city in the coming months.
