Mumbai: On Tuesday, the Maharashtra Legislative Council passed a resolution recommending the renaming of seven Mumbai suburban railway stations, reflecting local heritage and cultural significance. This move is part of a broader effort to align station names with historical and regional identities.
The approved changes include renaming Currey Road to Lalbaug, Marine Lines to Mumbadevi, Charni Road to Girgaum, Cotton Green to Kalachowkie, Sandhurst Road to Dongri, Dockyard Road to Mazgaon, and King’s Circle to Tirthankar Parshavnath. These changes are expected to strengthen the cultural connect and recognition of local landmarks. In a parallel development in the assembly, Shiv Sena (UBT) member Aaditya Thackeray sought updates on the status of renaming Aurangabad Airport to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport to Dina Patil Airport. Thackeray’s inquiry highlights the ongoing efforts to rename significant infrastructure to honour regional historical figures and leaders.
The renaming of these railway stations is seen as a significant move towards preserving and promoting the city’s rich cultural heritage. However, the implementation of these changes will require coordination with various stakeholders, including the railway authorities and local administrative bodies. The resolution’s passage marks a step forward in recognising and celebrating the historical and cultural ethos of Mumbai’s diverse communities. It also reflects the legislative body’s responsiveness to public sentiment and the importance of historical identities in urban nomenclature. As these changes take effect, Mumbai’s commuters can expect to see updated signage and announcements, ensuring that the city’s public transportation system aligns with its vibrant cultural heritage. This initiative is part of a broader trend across India, where cities are increasingly looking to rename places to reflect local history and cultural significance.
