Mumbai’s railway infrastructure is poised for a significant upgrade as work commences today on a new Western Railway (WR) corridor. This major initiative marks the beginning of the Rs 2,000 crore project aimed at constructing the much-anticipated 5th and 6th railway lines between Borivli and Virar.
The project is a crucial step towards separating suburban and outstation trains, enhancing operational efficiency across Mumbai’s suburban rail network. The new corridor project, starting on August 28, involves the development of a 4.5 km stretch of rail line between Goregaon and Kandivli. This expansion will require comprehensive land acquisition and the relocation of existing utilities. The district collectorate has already initiated the land acquisition process, and the Railways are actively working on relocating necessary utilities.
The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Limited (MRVC) has outlined significant progress in the project. A spokesperson confirmed that estimates, designs, and alignments have been finalised, supported by a drone survey to finalise the project layout. Approvals for major and minor bridge constructions are in place, and land acquisition is advancing through various stages. Current activities include the awarding of contracts for constructing service buildings and staff quarters. Work is underway on several critical components such as the relay room at Mira Road, signal office, tool room, RRI room, and RPF barracks at Dahisar, and the new station building at Naigaon. The tender for relocating structures, awarded on October 16, 2023, is also progressing.
Modifications at Naigaon station, including the construction and extension of foot overbridges and platforms, have begun following tenders awarded in February. Major and minor bridge construction tenders were invited on June 5. An MRVC official emphasised the importance of this infrastructure upgrade, stating, “The 5th and 6th lines between Borivli and Virar will dramatically enhance the commuting experience for millions, improving Mumbai’s suburban rail network and transforming the city’s transportation landscape.” With a targeted completion date set for December 2027, this project represents a significant investment in Mumbai’s rail infrastructure, promising improved connectivity and efficiency for the region.
