Mumbai’s Rainfall Boosts Lake Water Levels Over 70%

Mumbai has experienced a significant boost in its water reservoirs’ levels due to recent intense rainfall. As of the morning of July 26, seven key reservoirs supplying the city with water have surpassed the 70% mark in capacity, reflecting a notable increase from the previous day.

This surge comes in the wake of incessant rains, which prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for the city. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the combined water stock in these reservoirs now stands at 10,27,925 million litres, translating to 39.41% of their total live storage capacity. This is a substantial improvement from last year, when the reservoirs were at 58.93% at this time, though still below the 87.56% level recorded in 2022.

Modak Sagar has reached full capacity, with 100% live storage, after receiving 83 mm of rain and beginning to overflow on July 25. Tansa recorded 97 mm of rainfall, pushing its live storage to 98.61%. It began overflowing on July 24. Vehar received the highest rainfall at 150 mm, achieving 100% live storage and starting to overflow on July 25. Tulsi recorded 99 mm of rain and its live storage stands at 100%, having overflowed first on July 20. Middle Vaitarna saw 78 mm of rain and has a live storage of 69.40%. Bhatsa experienced 60 mm of rainfall, with live storage at 69.23%. Upper Vaitarna recorded the least rainfall at 63 mm and currently has the lowest storage.

These seven reservoirs, located across Thane, Nashik, and Mumbai districts, are critical for the city’s water supply, providing a daily total of 3,800 million litres. The reservoirs together have a combined capacity of 14.47 lakh million litres. In the last 24 hours leading up to 8 am on July 26, Mumbai recorded an average of 81 mm of rainfall, with eastern Mumbai receiving 80 mm and western Mumbai 92 mm. The forecast for the day predicts continued moderate to severe rain, with isolated areas potentially experiencing extremely heavy showers and gusty winds reaching 50–60 kmph.
