Mumbai’s Powai Lake, a vital ecological asset, is set to undergo significant restoration efforts as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) prepares to issue work orders for a sewage diversion project and the establishment of an 8 million litres per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant (STP). This initiative aims to address the persistent pollution issues caused by untreated sewage inflow, which has led to the proliferation of water hyacinth and other invasive vegetation, adversely affecting the lake’s water quality and biodiversity.
Currently, approximately 18 MLD of untreated sewage flows directly into Powai Lake daily, contributing to the rapid growth of water hyacinth. In response, the BMC has finalised plans to lay new sewage lines and construct an 8 MLD STP at the site of the now-defunct Powai pumping station. The treated water will be released back into the lake, while excess sewage will be diverted to existing treatment facilities. The tendering process for these projects is nearing completion, with work orders expected to be issued next week. Once initiated, the projects are anticipated to take 18 months to complete.
In the interim, the BMC has intensified efforts to remove the invasive water hyacinth from the lake. Between May 23 and June 1, 2025, the civic body removed 1,450 metric tonnes of hyacinth using five harvester machines and additional manpower. The extracted vegetation is being transported to disposal sites outside Mumbai. To ensure minimal impact on the lake’s ecosystem, the removal operations are being carried out under the guidance of experts from the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). Environmentalists have welcomed these initiatives but emphasise the need for comprehensive measures to restore the lake’s health. They advocate for the removal of sediment where hyacinth seeds have settled, as well as the implementation of sustainable practices to prevent future infestations.
The BMC has committed to addressing these concerns and ensuring that the restoration efforts are both effective and environmentally responsible. The Powai Lake restoration project underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between civic authorities, environmental experts, and local communities in safeguarding Mumbai’s natural heritage. As the city continues to urbanise, such initiatives are crucial in maintaining ecological balance and promoting sustainable urban living.
